NUTRA-LIFE NEW LOOK PACKAGING REFRESH FAQ’S

Updated 24 April 2024

NEW LOOK, SAME PREMIUM QUALITY

The Nutra-Life range is transforming to a new, more environment friendly packaging. Nutra-Life will be the first to market New Zealand supplement brand with the bottle and cap packaging made from at least 90% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials.

WHY THE CHANGE?

Vitaco Health (NZ) Limited is passionate about taking bold action for a healthier environment and is also working to the APCO target of using packaging that is 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

As Nutra-Life is a key brand in the Vitaco Health (NZ) Limited portfolio, we are proud that our move to post-consumer recycled materials is one of the positive steps we are taking to do our part in reducing environmental impact.

Not only that, but we have also evolved our design to make our products easier to find the information you are looking for.

WHAT ABOUT THE PACKAGING IS CHANGING?

Firstly, we are moving majority of our virgin plastic bottles & caps to at least 90% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials. This results in a reduction in carbon emissions and means we do not require virgin fossil fuel-based plastics.

Secondly, our label is moving from a metallic based to a plastic based material which will help reduce contamination in the recycling process.

WHAT IS POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED (PCR) MATERIAL & WHY IS IT BENEFICIAL?

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) material is created from waste that has been rescued from landfill. This is then cleaned and processed into plastic pellets which then goes on to create new products and packaging materials.

Nutra-Life will reuse the equivalent of 1.2 million 2L milk bottles per year to make our bottles, which reduces our carbon footprint by estimated* 76 tonnes per year.

When it comes to our cap, the PCR raw material is sourced from food packaging waste from Thailand.

*estimate provided by an independent environmental body.

HOW DID YOU GET TO AT LEAST 90% POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED (PCR) MATERIALS FOR THE BOTTLE & CAP?

Our bottles & caps are actually made from 100% post-consumer recycled material; however, we added a 3% white colourant to create a consistent look & feel across our supplements range, so we need to take this into account.

In addition, the wad underneath the cap could be considered the same – however the wad is not made from post-consumer recycled materials itself. Both wad and cap are still recyclable.

Therefore, the wad is included in the bottle & cap PCR calculation, along with the colourant which brings us to at least 90% across the range.

What is not accounted for in the bottle and cap claim is any packaging components that are separate to the bottle and cap specifically, which includes the induction seal, silica gels, scoops (powders only), and the label itself.

WHY ISN’T THE ENTIRE RANGE MOVING TO PCR?

Part of the Nutra-Life range of supplements is required in glass packaging for stability purposes, like our range of probiotics. These products will remain in glass bottles for this reason. The label will switch from a metallic-based label to a paper-based label to ensure recyclability for years to come.

Also, a handful of products in our range require a cap which is yet to be developed into post-consumer recycled material due to their unique make. These products include:

  • Nutra-Life Vitamin C 1200mg 200 tablets.
  • Nutra-Life Fish Oil 1500mg + Vit D 300 capsules.

IS IT NORMAL TO SEE SMALL MARKS IN THE PLASTIC?

Yes. Due to the recycled nature of the post-consumer recycled materials, you may notice some very small marks in the bottles and/or caps, which is normal. Rest assured that we have food-grade compliance for our primary packaging materials.

HOW DO I FIND THE NEW VERSION OF MY FAVOURITE PRODUCTS?

The look and feel of our products have been specially designed to be an evolutionary change so you can still find your products easily. Product names & claims will remain the same, and the overall colours & design will simply be a refreshed, modern take on what is available today.

The main changes to the design have been to improve legibility & make it easier for you to find the information you need.

WHEN WILL THE PACKAGING CHANGE OCCUR?

Our fresh look will start rolling onto shelves from May 2024. You will see a mix of old and new packaging on shelf as we changeover, but we anticipate to our range to be fully transitioned by the end of 2024.

WILL SOME FORMULAS CHANGE?

No! Our formulations & pack counts have not changed at all. The only changes as part of this fresh look are to the design itself and packaging materials only.
